TUCH
Tenant Union Cooperative Housing

The Tenant Union Cooperative Housing (TUCH) Program is developing activity of TURN. Its purpose is to form limited equity cooperatives that would provided high quality housing under the control of the tenant occupants. A cooperative is a corporation controlled by the residents of the property it owns. A limited equity cooperative is one the cost of joining is intentionally kept low, normally comparable to security deposit, in order to assure affordability.
While TURN’s overall goal is to provide a forum for tenants to address housing issues, this particular program is designed to use that advocacy to help TURN members make the transition from shelter insecurity to cooperative home ownership. Shelter insecurity is being forced to live in substandard housing and in fear of homelessness.
TURN has a long history of providing services to low-income tenants who are shelter insecure. TURN’s capacities currently range from providing tenants rights classes and individual tenants’ rights counseling to managing rental assistance, rental subsidy and transitional housing programs. The TUCH Program will consolidate and coordinate these capacities to increase the ability of people to manage their housing needs and ultimately own their own housing based on the cooperative model. While doing this program participants will be organized to support, monitor and counsel each other and encourage participation in activities that will improve affordable housing for everyone. The motto of the program will be “It’s your TURN to stay in TUCH.”
